The Market Hall Cherub

CherubOne of the two cherubs, which used to look down from some 50 feet above street level from the top of the Victorian Market Hall, was found in a garden near Whitchurch in early 2005. This has since been acquired by Chester City Council and has been put into store while opportunities for using it in the new market hall are being explored. The Victorian Market Hall was opened on 10th March 1863 - the same day as the marriage of HRH the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) to Princess Alexandra. Chester Corporation integrated the opening of the market hall with celebrations for the Royal Wedding including a procession led by a riffle band.

The building was built in cream sandstone in the baroque revival style which includes highly sculptural decoration. It was extended in 1882 providing a Venetian gothic link with the new Town Hall (completed 1869), and again in 1886 (adding a vegetable area) and 1898 (a fish market). The building was demolished in 1967 except for a fragment left next to the passage way leading to Hamilton Place (next to the Dublin Packet pub) and which today hints at the former building's splendour. The cherub could be used as a feature in the new market hall together with a panel (or panels) that tell the story of the market.
